A youth, allegedly closely associated with the Trinamool Congress has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old minor inside an abandoned factory in West Bengal’s Uttarpara area. The accused, identified as Dipankar Adhikari alias Sonai, was allegedly posing as a civic volunteer at the time of the incident.
According to police and local reports, the minor had gone to the closed Hind Motor factory on Friday evening with a friend. During the incident, the accused allegedly threatened the friend and forced him to flee, after which the minor was sexually assaulted.
Police said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the POCSO Act, and one accused has been arrested. He was produced before the Serampore court on Saturday, while investigation into the incident is continuing.
The accused had earlier been seen at several Trinamool programmes, though party leaders denied any organisational link. The minor’s lawyer expressed hope that justice would be delivered, while the district youth leadership said neither the party nor the government would tolerate wrongdoing.
